It has been compulsory for under 12's to wear a cycle helmet since 2018, but this week the French Senate is set to debate whether to make the wearing cycle helmets mandatory for bikes and other wheeled transport like electric scooters.
The has been an increase of 21% in accidents and deaths since 2019. If the law passes there could be a fine of 135 euro for not wearing your helmet.
Some cycle associations are against the plan as they say more must be invested in driver education. In contrast the French cycling manufacturing industry welcomes the move as it hopes to increase sales in Made in France cycle wear.
Other rules introduced in 2018

Your cycle must have working brakes on both wheels, correctly inflated tyres with sufficient tread, your cycle should be correctly serviced with nuts and bolts secured.
Fines for not complying to these condition risk a fine from €11 per bike, rising to €33 if not paid within 30 days.
At night or when visibility is poor, bikes must have a red light at the rear, as well as a white or yellow light in front.
Riders must also wear a reflective vest at all times at night or during low visibility, and risk an additional fine of €22-€75 if they do not.
