At the end of 2021 France issued a set of new laws and guidelines to promote travel by bicycle on public transport, including improved facilities for un dismantled cycles.

Intercity services such as Flixbus have some routes that transport cycles on racks but this is very limited.

All new public buses on rural routes that enter service after July 2021 must now be able to carry up to 5 cycles on a rack.

Information must be provided by the transport company for customers when booking a voyage. But there is an op out for local government bus service if they can give a valid reason.

The new law states that depending on the type of rail service, a minimum of 4 to 8 spaces for un-dismantled bicycles must be provided in all new rolling stock ordered or coming into service after March 2021 this includes stock that will be converted or renovated. (this is excluding urban services). Again there are exemptions for some renovations.

The final part of the new law is aims to improve and develop secure parking for bicycles in stations and exchanges including better access.

It will be interesting to see if new buses and trains have the capacity to carry extra cycles, let me know if you spot one of these new buses or trains.
