Upgrades continue on the tow path on The Canal du Midi

The Department of Hérault in South East France continues to renovate the tow path along the Canal du Midi. This stretch of the route, famous for its narrow tow path, filled with potholes and encroaching tree trunks.

What is completed and in the pipeline?

  • The tow path has been completed from Poilhes to Béziers.
  • The council last June upgraded the tow path between the Malpas tunnel and outskirts of Béziers.
  • Recently the council has focused on the condition of the tow path between Malpas and the town of Poilhes, crossing Régimont-le-Haut.
  • The next phase of work will take place before summer in the West, going towards the department of Aude. During the works, cyclists are invited to take the RD37 departmental road from Poilhes and continue on the municipal roads towards Malpas.

All the above is part of a project to develop cycling in the Hérault Department, which has invested 9 million euros to date. The Hérault has 700 kilometres of cycle routes including tracks, cycleways, shared lanes... By 2024, the council hopes to increase the network by 400 kilometres.
